Heat Pumps

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to all your heat pump questions

  • How do heat pumps work?

Heat pumps work by transferring heat energy. Click here. for a detailed explanation.

  • What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

Air conditioners provide you cool heat when you desire. Like Air conditioners, heat pumps also provide cooling. On top of that, they use a reversing valve to change the function form cooling to heating, bringing you warmth in the winter.

  • Are heat pumps efficient?

Heat pumps are very efficient. On average they are between 200%-300% efficient, meaning thet get between 2 and 3 units of energy for every 1 they put in.

Heat pumps are measured in 2 energy ratings:

    • Seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER) is the rating for the heat pump in cooling mode
    • Heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) is the rating for the heat pump in heating mode.
    • The higher the SEER or HSPF number, the more efficient they are.
  • Are heat pumps loud?

The noise level of a heat pump varies from model to model and brand to brand. Just like car tires, some are more loud than others. Modern technology has allowed for even the base models to be quieter than they used to make heat pumps, and the high end models come with parts on the heat pump to make them very quiet.

  • Are heat pumps good in cold weather?

Just like the noise level, the performance in cold weather depends on the quality of heat pump. Higher end cold climate heat pumps can still perform efficiently in cold weather, however, we always recommending having some sort of backup heat.

  • How long do heat pumps last?

The lifespan of heat pumps varies on the quality of heat pump you have, and the frequency of maintenance is has received.
