I was born in Kitimat, grew up in Terrace, lived in Smithers, Hamilton, and Chatham, then finally made the right choice and moved to Nanaimo ten years ago. I started in the plumbing trade in my mid-twenties, received my red seal ticket and married my beautiful wife Alina when I was 29. A few years later we moved to Hamilton, where I started in plumbing wholesale. After twenty years I was given the exciting opportunity to join the team at Norm’s and look forward to working with such a great team. My pastimes are reading, curling, camping, and going on walks with our dog, Zack.

1. What’s your name and job title at Norm’s?
   Kris Upton HVAC Manager.
2. How long have you been working in the trades? How long at Norm’s?
   “I’ve been working in the trade for 21 years and 3 years at Norms
3. What inspired you to get into plumbing/HVAC/your trade?
   I started off in Mechanical Engineering and left that world for a more hands on approach, through engineering I was emersed in ammonia refrigeration and working on large capacity refrigeration equipment and it sparked a passion in the refrigerant world which I have pursued ever since.
4. What do you enjoy most about your job or working at Norm’s?
   What’s not to like working here, I enjoy the core values of Norms, how they support the community, each other, value and emphasise the continual pursuit of education and most importantly that they are one of the only companies with unwavering principles to do things right and continuously better themselves on this. While remaining family owned with real family values in a world where it seems everyone else is sacrificing these values to be more corporate and chase profit over doing what’s right first and foremost.
5. What’s one thing you’re proud of in your career so far?
   I hold more tickets and certifications in this industry than anyone else I have ever met. Continued pursuit of education and being the best at what I do. Numerous awards and recognition for my achievements!
6. What’s your approach when working in a customer’s home?
   Reflecting all of our shared core values, while building a life long relationship centered and grounded with transparency, trust, and knowledge. When designing a system doing so in a custom tailored way, building and designing a system around the homes infrastructure and engineered heat load. In a all other aspects with unwavering commitment to being the best and providing the best service, communication and commitment to everyone.
7. What do you like to do when you’re not working?
   Family – It’s why I do what I do. Travel when I can, home renos and concerts.
8. Anything else you’d like people to know about you?
   I’m one of the rare people who loves his job and doesn’t look at it like work. Happy to share my experience and knowledge with anyone.
